Cardiovascular disease (CVD) is a general term meaning diseases of the heart and blood vessels. It includes heart attacks, heart failure and stroke as well as other types of heart disease. Heart attacks occur when blood vessels supplying the heart muscle are suddenly blocked. The section of the heart muscle devoid of oxygen-rich blood becomes damaged if the flow isn’t restored within a few hours.
